All about Batteries and How to Preserve Them

Batteries are everywhere. Whether they’re in our cars, remote controls, laptops, cell phones, or iPods, batteries are all over the place.  Batteries usually always have two terminals – one marked positive and one marked negative.  The ends of the battery are normally where these positive and negative terminals are; however, in a car battery, there are two heavy lead posts that act as the terminals.  Electrons collect on the negative terminal of the battery, and if you connect a wire between the negative and positive, the electrons will flow back and forth as fast as they can and will wear out the battery very quickly.  This also tends to be dangerous with larger batteries.

You would normally connect some type of load to the battery using the wire.  This could include something such as a light bulb, an electronic circuit or a motor.  Inside the battery, a chemical reaction produces the electrons.  The speed of this electron production controls how many electrons can flow between the terminals.  The electrons flow from the battery into a wire and must travel from the negative terminal to the positive for this chemical reaction to take place.  Unless electrons are flowing, chemical reactions do not take place, making the life of a battery extremely long if it sits, unused, for a while.  A great way to test your batteries, to make sure they are still alive and kicking, is to use battery testing equipment.  This equipment will make sure that your battery’s life is always plentiful and will detect any imperfections with it.  Battery monitoring systems do essentially same thing as testing equipment, as they monitor everything having to do with your battery and what it is powering.

Batteries can be tricky to understand but making sure that you are doing everything you can to preserve the life of your batteries is essential in whatever those batteries are fueling.  Knowing and understanding how a battery works, as well as the equipment that monitors it, is key in making that battery last as long as possible.  Look into what you can do to prolong your battery life and tools you can buy to help in the process.
