What is a Solar Charge Controller?

If a solar power system utilizes batteries, it will also require a solar charge controller. Solar charge controllers work to regulate the power moving from the solar panels to the batteries. A proper charge controller will prevent the batteries from being overcharged. You can read solar power battery if you are interested in learning more about solar batteries.

When the level of voltage in a battery reaches a certain threshold, the charge controller will halt the charging process. Previously, most charge controllers had mechanical relays, which opened and closed the circuit.

Eventually, pulse width modulation (PWM) became the norm for the charge controlling mechanism. This is a technique by which the amount of power transferred to a battery is reduced gradually as the battery reaches maximum charge. PWM extends battery life even further, as it reduces stress on the battery. PWM charge controllers may also be used to keep batteries in a completely charged state indefinitely. PWM also has the extra benefit of not using any breakable mechanical connections.

The most recent types of solar charge controllers use maximum power point tracking, or MPPT. MPPT controllers convert extra voltage into amperage. This feature has a couple of significant benefits.

Most solar power systems make use of 12 volt batteries, similar to the ones used in cars, but these benefits hold regardless of voltage. Most solar panels produce more voltage than the batteries require. When the extra voltage is converted into amps, the charge voltage stays at an optimal level, while the time required to fully charge the batteries is reduced. This way, the solar power system as a whole operates at the highest possible level of efficiency.

An MPPT charge controller will also reduce the amount of power loss within a solar power system. The lower the voltage of electricity, the more loss it experiences as it travels along wires. A PWM charge controller used in a system with 12v batteries, for example, would use electricity of around 18v. With an MPPT controller, the voltage will be substantially higher. MPPT controllers suffer from less power loss because of this improvement.

Compared to PWM controllers, MPPT charge controllers are somewhat more expensive, but their performance is significantly enhanced. For this reason, they’re highly recommended. Finally, it can also be possible to prevent reverse-current flow with certain modern charge controllers. In some instances, at night, the batteries may start to send power back to the solar panels. This type of power loss can also make a serious dent in the overall efficiency of a solar power system. A charge controller will open the circuit when the flow of electricity from the solar panels stops, preventing any power from being transferred back to them.

Many people are aware that solar chargers are a good alternative to non-renewable sources of energy, but not everyone knows just how easy they are to build. Go to 12 volt solar charger if you are interested in learning more about the 12 volt charger.

Coherent Noise Rejection in a Three-Phase Power Inverter

Coherent Noise Rejection in a Three-Phase Power Inverter

In this thesis, we discuss the design of a controller to reject the effects of high order harmonics in a three-phase power inverter. Specifically, coherent noise in the fifth harmonic is considered, as it seems to be dominant in most applications. The controller used in this power inverter operates in a reference frame synchronous with the 60 Hz line voltage. This transformation effectively change…
